Montenegro Magic

As summer approaches in the north (I live in Australia), many are beginning to scramble to get their last minute plans sorted for the annual voyage abroad. If the current threat of Coronavirus isn’t deterring the need to travel, I will share my experience from my visit to Montenegro last August.

We decided to travel to Montenegro as it has always appealed based on the incredible images in magazines and the mystery surrounding the country as many choose to visit neighbouring Croatia. Upon arrival, I was not disappointed. The locals are extremely welcoming and hospitable, wanting you to enjoy the beauty of Montenegro just as they do. We stayed in a town called Kamenari, accessible via a free ferry after a 10 minute drive from Tivat airport. Considering the towns are mainly accessible by the one road that trails along the water and at the bottom of the cliffs, this was most convenient.

Our stay at the Casa del Mare Mediterraneo was seamless - a rare feature when travelling. We arrived late, and they had a glass of champagne and the room ready upon arrival. After a seafood dinner on their rooftop, we planned our days ahead. It mainly consisted of us reserving the usual sun lounge on the private jetty and beach in front of the hotel. How could we resist? The views of the mountains, crystal waters and cocktails made for a not so shabby Monday.

Aside from being a lounge lizard, we hired a private driver who drove us to Sveti Stefan, Budva and Kotor - thank god as we would not have lasted hours on a bus. A great way to see the towns, ask the questions and run our own itinerary. Budva is absolutely the Gold Coast of Montenegro - a party town and I will forever cherish the lolly shop within the walls of the old town. Despite the heat, the history of Kotor was fascinating, and I was in cat heaven.

If you love seafood and minimal tourists, Montenegro is the go. From the clifftop dining, the cheap food, the friendly locals and relaxed atmosphere on a hot summers day, please do yourself a favour.
